Google Chrome Finalizes Phase-Out of Legacy Ad Blockers

With the upcoming release of Chrome versions 150 and 151, Google is scrubbing the final remnants of Manifest V2 code from its browser architecture. This move marks the definitive end for older ad-blocking extensions that relied on the deprecated platform, forcing all users onto the restrictive Manifest V3 standard by mid-summer.

The transition represents the final stage of a long-planned migration that began in 2024. While many users have already migrated to Manifest V3-compatible extensions such as uBlock Origin Lite, the removal of legacy code ensures that even creative workarounds will no longer function. Google developer Devlin Cronin noted that maintaining the outdated infrastructure created mounting technical debt and introduced specific security vulnerabilities that the company is no longer willing to accommodate.

Cronin emphasized that while Chrome will strictly enforce these new standards, other browser developers remain free to retain support for older extensions if they choose. For the average Chrome user, however, the update means that any remaining tools built on the Manifest V2 framework will simply cease to operate once the browser updates in June and July.
