US Forces Strike in Venezuela Kills Alleged Gang Leader

American military forces, working alongside Venezuelan authorities, carried out a lethal strike against a compound in Venezuela, killing Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, the alleged leader of the Tren de Aragua gang. President Donald Trump confirmed the operation on Friday, labeling the move a swift execution of the criminal figure.

The Pentagon confirmed that the attack, which took place earlier this week, successfully targeted the man known as Niño Guerrero. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth noted that the operation was the result of coordinated efforts between US Southern Command and local forces. While the administration frames the killing as a victory against illicit networks, the action has drawn sharp criticism from legal experts and human rights advocates.

Brian Finucane of the International Crisis Group described the operation as a piece of lawless, performative killing. He argued that because Tren de Aragua does not qualify as an organized armed group under international standards, the strike falls outside the parameters of armed conflict, effectively categorizing the act as premeditated murder. This incident follows a series of controversial US military actions in the Caribbean and Pacific, where dozens of boat bombings have resulted in over 200 deaths under the stated goal of curbing drug trafficking.
