Valve Ends Physical Steam Card Sales to Combat Fraud

The decision marks the end of a program that began in 2012. Valve expects remaining inventory to clear out by the end of 2026, though existing cards will remain valid for account redemptions indefinitely. The move follows years of unsuccessful attempts to mitigate fraud through law enforcement collaboration and retail warnings.

Valve officials pointed to the Federal Trade Commission’s research on how criminals coerce victims into purchasing cards and surrendering the codes. Despite previous efforts to limit availability and add consumer alerts, the company concluded that scammers have effectively adapted their methods. Digital gift cards will remain available as the primary alternative for users.
