The latest update allows users to initiate research projects by posing direct questions rather than relying solely on pre-uploaded documents or videos. NotebookLM now leverages Google Search to identify and vet relevant web sources, giving users control over which materials to ingest into their notebooks. This marks a departure from its original 2023 design, which functioned primarily as a closed system for existing files.
Under the hood, the platform now utilizes the Antigravity agentic coding framework. Each notebook is backed by a secure cloud computer capable of executing code to perform advanced analysis. This infrastructure supports a significantly broader range of outputs, including PDF documents, CSV files, PowerPoint presentations, and various data visualizations. Access is currently restricted to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace customers, though the company intends to broaden availability as the technology matures.
