Billionaire Campaign Against California Wealth Tax Reaches Mar-a-Lago

As millions of American families struggle with the rising costs of healthcare and basic necessities, Google co-founder Sergey Brin was spotted dining at Mar-a-Lago. Seated at the president's left during a MAGA Inc. fundraiser, Brin continues to bankroll a massive effort to defeat a proposed California wealth tax.

The proposed ballot measure, Proposition 40, seeks a one-time 5% levy on the state’s billionaires to mitigate the impact of federal Medicaid cuts signed into law by Donald Trump. Brin has reportedly committed over $100 million to fight the initiative, even relocating his primary residence to Nevada to avoid potential tax exposure. He serves as the primary financier for the group Building a Better California, which is actively promoting competing measures to block the tax.

Political tension surrounding the issue has intensified as California Governor Gavin Newsom recently endorsed Proposition 42, an alternative measure backed by the same interest groups, which would effectively nullify the billionaire tax. Representative Ro Khanna criticized the alliance between the governor and wealthy donors, stating the tax would generate $100 billion—90% of which is earmarked for healthcare—to prevent approximately 3 million Californians from losing coverage. Senator Bernie Sanders condemned the spending, labeling the effort to block the tax while millions lack basic care as obscene.
