Atari bets on 8-bit nostalgia with new gaming smartwatch

Atari is bypassing the modern smartwatch arms race by launching a wearable that prioritizes classic arcade titles over productivity apps. The Atari 2600 My Play Watch allows users to play Centipede, Pong, Super Breakout, and Missile Command directly on the wrist, using the crown dial as a retro-style paddle controller.

Priced at $79.99, the device is aimed at gamers looking for a nostalgic accessory rather than a high-performance fitness tracker. While the watch includes standard health metrics like step counting and heart rate monitoring, it lacks Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. This disconnect prevents smartphone notifications but also traps the device in its current state, as users cannot download new software or expand the game library.

The hardware builds upon the foundation of the Space Invaders My Play Watch released via Kickstarter last year. Atari has upgraded the design with a 2.02-inch touchscreen and a more robust metal case. The package includes three swappable, retro-themed bands for a limited release window. Preorders are open now through the Atari online store, with units scheduled to ship by June 10, 2025.
