UK to Implement Under-16 Social Media Ban by Next Spring

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a sweeping prohibition on social media access for children under 16, aiming to curb the platforms' addictive influence. The policy, which excludes messaging apps like WhatsApp, targets major networks including TikTok, Instagram, and X, with enforcement expected to begin as early as next spring.

The government’s strategy aims to reclaim childhood development from digital interference, citing concerns over mental health, cyberbullying, and addictive design features like infinite scrolling. While messaging services remain unaffected, AI-driven romantic companion chatbots will face strict age-gating, restricted exclusively to users over 18. This initiative aligns the U.K. with a global trend of digital regulation, following Australia’s lead and ongoing discussions in nations including Canada and France.

Starmer defended the move despite skepticism from experts regarding technical feasibility. The policy follows a broad public consultation where over 83% of participating parents concluded that the risks of social media exposure significantly outweigh any potential benefits. The Prime Minister emphasized that the ban is intended to restore the balance of daily life, encouraging children to prioritize sleep, physical activity, and traditional reading over screen-locked engagement.
