Apple and Google push Thread 1.4 to smart home hubs

Apple and Google have begun rolling out the Thread 1.4 specification to their flagship streaming devices, marking a significant milestone in the quest to unify fragmented smart home networks. The update, appearing in tvOS 27 developer betas and Google TV Streamer software, targets the persistent friction of managing overlapping connectivity protocols.

Apple and Google push Thread 1.4 to smart home hubs

The core objective of Thread 1.4 is to enable seamless credential sharing between Thread Border Routers. Currently, many smart home users find their devices creating isolated, competing networks rather than a single, cohesive mesh. By standardizing how these devices exchange security credentials—similar to sharing a Wi-Fi password—the update aims to allow new hardware to join existing ecosystems effortlessly.

While the technical infrastructure is arriving, practical implementation remains in flux. The Google TV Streamer now displays an option to generate QR codes for network joining, though early reports suggest the functionality is not yet fully stable. Similarly, while Apple TV units running the latest beta show compatibility with the 1.4 spec, the interface for credential sharing has yet to surface. Other key devices, including HomePod speakers and Google Nest Hubs, are still waiting for their respective firmware updates.

Despite the current growing pains, the industry is gradually moving toward a unified standard. Samsung and Ikea have already integrated credential-sharing capabilities into their respective SmartThings and Dirigera hubs. With Amazon committed to updating its smart speakers to the latest specification this year, the fragmented landscape of multiple, non-communicating Thread networks appears to be nearing an end. Once all major ecosystems align, the promise of a truly interoperable Matter-over-Thread home may finally shift from a technical goal to a reliable reality.
