The sale, recorded on June 5, significantly expands Waymo’s testing infrastructure. The Arizona property includes a 115-acre city course, a four-mile oval track, and a dedicated freeway circuit. These facilities far exceed the scale of the company’s existing test locations in California and Ohio. A Waymo spokesperson confirmed the acquisition will support rider-only testing and motion control development as the company scales its fleet.
Apple originally acquired the site in 2021 for $125 million, following years of leasing the land from Fiat Chrysler. The tech giant used the grounds to trial prototype vehicles during its decade-long pursuit of an autonomous car, an endeavor it abandoned in early 2024. Waymo is now integrating the space into its broader expansion strategy, which currently includes a fleet of nearly 4,000 vehicles and plans to produce tens of thousands of robotaxis annually using Zeekr and Hyundai Ioniq 5 platforms.
