The scale of this year's cull is unprecedented for the wearable line. Apple’s initial documentation for watchOS 27 limited compatibility to the Series 10, Watch Ultra 2, and the SE 3, though the Series 9 was later reinstated following confusion over the update's requirements. This shift represents a significant departure from previous cycles; watchOS 26 maintained support for the Series 6, the second-generation SE, and all existing Ultra models. Consequently, users holding onto Series 6, 7, and 8 devices find themselves sidelined despite these watches being released as recently as 2022.
Discrepancies persist in the iPad lineup as well. iPadOS 27 officially terminates support for the 8th-generation standard iPad. While initial reports suggested broader exclusions for the Air series, Apple clarified that 4th-generation and 5th-generation iPad Air models remain within the support window. The inconsistency is stark: a 2019 iPhone 11 remains functional under the latest software, yet significantly newer wearables are being phased out. Apple has yet to provide a definitive list clarifying the status of the first-generation Watch Ultra, which continues to run the developer beta despite its absence from official compatibility documentation.
